I was working on local songwriter Paul Hulm’s latest tracks recently and since he was eager to get some tracks placed in tv or film he suggested something very simple and very effective – Instrumental versions of his current tracks. This is a great way of helping a director see the potential in a track without distracting from the on-screen development with lyrical content that may not necessarily agree with the mood or flow of the visuals. So we are stripping back the tracks, muting the vocals and rebuilding the mixes to discover the strengths of the remaining elements. This has been revealing as it has shown the strength of the relationship between two or three basic musical elements in a well written song. It’s kind of obvious but sometimes in this digital age we have so much available to us we forget how great simple music is and that it leaves space for the listener to explore rather than a cacophony of 6 or more parts fighting for space. For TV or Film, unless you want to intentionally panic the listener keeping it clear and simple will work far better.
I have embarked on producing an online educational course aimed at beginner audio engineers and musicians. The course will be available on the Udemy.com platform and I hope to complete the content by early September and publish mid-September. Much work to be done!
Working on Paul Hulm’s latest tracks – All 5 of them! Sounding good and enjoying working on acoustic tracks again, but I can’t leak them yet! Excited for him 🙂
Sincere apologies for the delay in posting the final product but I was really down to the wire on getting my CD posted to RPM HQ and frankly I fell asleep yesterday evening! But it’s here now and the album is titled – ‘Remember Why You Started!’ It was a real experience closing this project off but I have some solid demos now that I can expand on and a few remixes and artwork to finalise before I’m brave enough to play this material live. Please excuse the dodgy vocals, much work needed I fear :s Thank you so much for reading. I should be posting again for a new revived synth-pop project soon enough under the guise of ‘Veterans of Safety.’ 🙂
This is ‘Monster’ and is track 5 hopefully but may be promoted to track 2 for good behaviour! A lot of work on this one, but so far the vocals are very rough and I copied verse one over to verse two for continuity but there will be more lyrics of course. Now on to the other deserving tracks and the habitual last minute instrumentals to beef up the track count. Thanks for listening!
I won’t post a copy just yet, but track no 5 which is now titled – ‘Monster’ finally has a chorus 🙂 I must have spent 5 hours between last night and this evening on ONE chorus! Yes, ONE chorus which consist of probably 7 notes and a few lines of words. I can’t believe how difficult it is to construct a seemingly original vocal line. I was almost ready to throw in the towel and a melody came to me. I am exhausted, cup of tea and bed…
This track is BIG and Dark… It reminds me of so many rock bands from the 90s, the dawning of Alternative, atleast i think that’s what the magazines liked to call it. Enjoy. Lyrics are looming and I have wayyyyyy too much work to do 🙂
